Heavy equipment  or  heavy machinery  refers to heavy-duty vehicles specifically designed for construction tasks, most commonly earthmoving or other major construction work. Heavy equipment  typically consists of five equipment systems: implement, thrust, structure, power train, and control/information.

Heavy equipment has been in use since at least the 1st century BC, when the ancient Roman engineer Vitruvius described a crane in  De architectura  as being powered by human or animal labor.

Heavy equipment functions at the mechanical advantage of a simple machine, the ratio between applied force and applied force is multiplied, making tasks that could take hundreds of people and weeks of labor without heavy equipment far less intense in nature. Some equipment uses hydraulic drives as the primary source of propulsion.
